You Made It Through the First Week!
Take a moment to notice: you and your child just finished the first week of preschool. However it went — smooth mornings or tearful ones, instant confidence or a slow warm-up — you both did something brand new, and that's worth celebrating.
What This Week Was Really About
The first week isn't about mastering routines or making a dozen new friends. It's about your child learning something much bigger: that this new place is safe, that their teacher is someone they can trust, and that you always come back. That's a lot of emotional work for a small person, even on the days that looked calm from the outside.
If This Week Was Hard
Tears at drop-off, a quiet or clingy child, a rough night's sleep from all the newness — all of this is completely normal for a first week, and it doesn't predict how the weeks ahead will go. Many children need this exact adjustment period before settling comfortably into their new routine. Please don't read too much into a hard week one.
If This Week Went Smoothly
Wonderful! Also, a gentle heads-up: it's common for a few tougher days to show up in week two or three, once the initial excitement wears off and the reality of a new routine settles in. If that happens, it isn't a step backward — it's simply part of the adjustment continuing to unfold.
Small Signs of Progress to Watch For
• A goodbye that takes a little less coaxing than Monday's
• Mentioning a friend's name or a teacher's name at home
• Talking about something specific that happened during the day
• Falling asleep a little easier at bedtime, worn out in a good way
• Walking in with a bit more confidence than the day before
Progress at this age rarely looks like a straight line — celebrate the small, wobbly steps forward wherever you spot them.
A Few Ways to Support the Weekend Reset
Keep the routine gentle. A slightly slower pace over the weekend gives your child (and you!) a chance to recover from a big week of new experiences.
Talk about school with warmth
Even brief, positive mentions — "I loved hearing about your day at pickup" — help reinforce that school is a good place.
Prepare for Monday early
A calm, unrushed morning routine helps ease back into the week, especially after a couple of days off from the new schedule.
Watch for tiredness, not trouble
A cranky or extra-emotional child at the end of week one is very often simply an exhausted one. A full week of new stimulation is a lot to process, even when it's going well.
